Commercial Digital Talking Book Players

Smartphones and tablets

Many smartphones and tablets can use the free BARD mobile app to download audio and braille books. To use BARD mobile you must first have an account with GLS, and you must register for BARD.

The BARD mobile app is compatible with Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The device needs to be running iOS 5.1.1 or later. Talking books will play through the app, and are downloaded so you can read them offline. If you connect a refreshable braille display you can download braille books through the app as well.

Android devices with OS 4.1 and up can also download and use the BARD mobile app for talking books. The app will also work with the second generation Kindle Fire.

Search for “BARD mobile” in the app store for your device in order to find the app.

Other Third-Party Players

GLS provides every patron with a NLS digital talking book player. However, there are third party devices which are compatible with the NLS talking books and/or braille books. The NLS page on talking book players has an extensive list of devices. Included with each device listed is a description of its features, size, price and a link to distributors.

Please note this page is for informational purposes only. GLS does not endorse or recommend any of these products, brands or suppliers. This list should not be considered all-inclusive, and GLS may add or take away from this list as technology changes.
