Georgia residents who are unable to read or handle standard printed materials as a result of temporary or permanent visual disability, reading disability, or physical disability qualify for GLS services. This includes:
Z
Persons who are legally blind or cannot see well enough or focus long enough to read standard print, even with glasses.
Z
Persons who are unable to hold or turn pages of print books.
Z
Persons diagnosed with a perceptual or reading disability that makes printed works inaccessible.
- Eligibility is extended to:
- Individuals who have had a qualifying disability from birth.
- Individuals who are disabled because of medical conditions or trauma.
- Individuals who become disabled as they age.
- Temporary conditions: Individuals who have a temporary disability may qualify for service on a temporary basis.
- U.S. Veterans: Individuals who are blind or have a print disability and who have been honorably discharged from the armed forces of the United States receive special priority.
Every individual application must be signed by a Certifying Authority.
- Medical doctors
- Ophthalmologists
- Optometrists
- Registered nurses
- Therapists
- Professional staff of hospitals, institutions, and public or private welfare agencies, including:
- Educators
- Social workers
- Case workers
- Counselors
- Rehabilitation teachers
- Certified reading specialists
- School psychologists
- School superintendents
- Librarians
