Tech Talk is one of our newest recurring programs, but it is already a popular part of the GLS lineup of offerings. Launched in August 2022, Tech Talk is a two-hour virtual meeting that occurs on the second Wednesday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The schedule runs from January through October, allowing for a holiday break at the end of the year.

We sat down with Daniel Chrismer, our Reader Advisor who specializes in technology training, and asked him to give us the details on Tech Talk.

Q: Who is Tech Talk aimed at?
A: Tech Talk is primarily geared toward people who are new to assistive technology and those who wish to brush up on fundamentals. It is also a great place to share any special advice or tips and tricks gained through experience. Even a few of our more tech-savvy patrons mentioned they’ve learned a thing or two by attending Tech Talk.

Q: What can someone expect when they attend Tech Talk?
A: Tech Talk is a friendly place where beginners to assistive technology can learn new skills and discuss subjects relating to accessibility. Participants can expect a lively presentation and discussion of the session topics, with plenty of time for questions to be asked and answered by the group.

Q: What are some of the hot topics from the first few sessions?
A: The discussions on Apple Voiceover and Seeing AI (a versatile accessibility app for iOS) drew lots of attention and led to some very interesting conversations.

Q: Describe a memorable Tech Talk moment.
A: One of our Tech Talk participants sparked a fascinating conversation on the many benefits of using a Bluetooth keyboard with an iPhone. She talked about navigating iPhone apps solely from the keyboard and highlighted how well Voiceover works alongside a Bluetooth keyboard to audibly announce keys as they’re pressed.

Q: Can GLS patrons request topics for Tech Talk?
A: Absolutely! Patrons with topic ideas can call the library and ask to speak with Daniel. Of course, anyone should feel free to suggest topics during a Tech Talk discussion. This is meant to be a collaborative effort covering topics that are relevant to our patrons, so any and all input is welcome!

Q: What else do GLS patrons need to know about Tech Talk?
A: Tech Talk is hosted on the Zoom platform and sessions are recorded and made available to patrons. The recordings are a great way to review and practice what was covered. In 2023 we will explore the possibility of hosting Tech Talk in person at GLS Atlanta.
